You Are Enough!

Imagine seeing a little girl sitting all alone, sobbing, with her hands covering her face. You lovingly approach her and ask what is wrong. She doesn’t look up and though she can barely get the words out, she begins to mutter that nobody likes her, no one wants to play with her, and they always call her names. You try to console her and tell her it couldn’t be that bad but to no avail. She tells you they tease her. They laugh at her. They say mean things about her and never include her.

Although you can’t explain it, there is something eerily familiar about her. But how could this be? After all, you have never met her, or have you? So, when she finally grows weary of crying, she lifts her little head with her cheeks still damp with tears, and her beautiful wide brown eyes meet with yours, and your heart suddenly breaks in two, because you realize she is you.

Have you ever thought about what you would say to the little girl in you? Well, I have. I would tell her, You Are Enough!

I would tell her that she is just as pretty, just as smart, and just as capable as any of them. I would tell her that one day when she grows up, the very things that make her different will become her superpower! I would tell her there is nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with her. She is perfect just the way she is. I would tell her that she doesn’t need to change; they do.

I would tell her it’s ok to cry because she’s human and humans have feelings. Someday God will gather all her tears and pour them in a bottle, and she will use them to water her own garden and theirs too. She will have the prettiest, most colorful garden anyone has ever seen! I would tell her not to waste time being angry, spiteful or vengeful. Her heart is too beautiful for that!

I would tell her that she was never meant to fit in, but to stand out. God created her to be exactly who she is, and that He never ever makes mistakes. I would tell her about her bright future. How beautifully unique her voice would become and how her love affair with words would someday melt hearts and give people courage to believe again.

I would tell her she must never doubt herself and that sometimes when the task ahead feels scary, she must learn to do it afraid. I would remind her of how special she is and that sometimes when people are threatened by her, they will try to make her feel small, but she must never shrink for anyone!

After a while, her tears give way to smiles and she naively asks, how do you know all of this?

And you say, because I am you, and baby girl, we turned out just fine!
